• Apply for food stamps as soon as possible so you never have to spend money on food

• Find a roommate

• Get a library card

• Go to museums on “Free Days” [Field Museum Discount Days; Thursdays from 5pm – 8pm are free at the Art Institute of ChicagoShedd Aquarium Discount Days; Museum of Science and Industry Free Days; admission is free on Tuesdays at the Museum of Contemporary Art; the Chicago History Museum is free on Mondays; the Chicago Children’s Museum is free on Thursday nights from 5pm – 8pm; the DuSable Museum of African American History is free on Sundays; the Notebaert Nature Museum is free on Thursdays; List of Chicago museums]

• Go to University of Chicago events – free food and interesting topics

• Visit Gaper’s Block for more fun Chicago events and news

• Find an apartment that includes utilities in the rent

• Walk or take the bus or train if possible – parking can be difficult to find and/or expensive

• Pack a lunch

• Pay for what’s in your lunch with food stamps!

• Do you really need Cable TV or High Speed Internet?

• Check out free events in the city and at the parks

• Make your own coffee, tea, beer and wine

• Look for sales (stock up!)

• Play outside in the free air and the free sun

• Get food stamps!

• Reuse! Reduce! Recycle! (because you should!)
